FAQ

Do you offer full time and part time care?
Yes we offer full and half day care. To help babies and children settle the minimum of sessions we offer is two half days.

What is your staff turn over?
Our turn over of staff is very low. Many of our staff have been with us from the start or they joined us in the first year of opening. We offer a realalitic wage above the minimum wage for our qualified staff and members of staff also benefit from a health care policy paid for by the company and subsidised private gym membership. We encourage staff to extend their training and offer pay rises when they complete.

Do you have a friendly team, who will make my child feel welcome?
We consider all the team to be very friendly and welcoming, whilst being proffesional and aware of security. We feel that our team builds good friendly relationships with parents, which helps parents and children to feel more relaxed.

Do you have an outside area?
Yes we have a secure outside play area, which has safety rubber flooring, which is covered with artificial grass, which is colourful, clean and soft. The children have fresh air everyday, if possible twice a day. We provide waterproofs and ask you to provide your child with 'wellies' as we try to get the children to have fresh air no matter what the weather. If it's cold we wrap up warm. We have bright lighting outside, so we can even enjoy some fresh air as the winter nights draw in. In the warmer weather the children enjoy the outside with shelter from the sun. We provide sun cream for all the baiaes and children subject to no allergies.

Does the nursery consider safety important?
Whilst we want the babies and children to be happy, safety is always a priority. We have a full fire alarm system, emergency lighting, fire doors, radiator covers, finger trap guards on all fire doors, thermo mixing valves on all taps to protect from scalding. We have a full CCTV system throughout the nursery, we are able to view all the children at any time whilst at nursery. If you choose to put your child in our care, we will ask you to give a full list of persons with authority to pick up your child. We also ask for photograghes of these people, they will also have to identify themselves by knowing the child's full name, date of birth and password. If we have any doubt, we will refuse to release the child until we have contacted the parents. We also have a secure finger print system to allow parents who are registered with us and have agreed to the strict useage of the system access to enter the building at certain times of the day. This gives parents the chance to see their baby or child at play and also makes them feel part of the nursery, it also ensures satff do not have to leave the children in order to answer the door. Our priority is the safety of the children in our care.

What about staff to child ratio's?
Part of the reason for our low staff turnover, is we stick to correct ratio's and do not expect staff to work too many hours. All ratio's are adhered to, extra staff are available for cooking and covering staff lunchbreaks, office and administration.
If your baby or child is under two years old, the minimum ratio is a one to three. When your child is two years old, the ratio is a minimum of one to four. When your child is three years old, the ratio is a minimum of one to eight.
These are minimum ratio's, we have extra staff to cover breaks, planning, paperwork, cooking etc.
If a child moves into a different unit because the child needs to, it may be because they are ready for the toddler room, the ratio's are still maintained for their age, regardless of the room they are in.  Again some children are more than ready for pre-school before they reach their third birthday, ratio's for their age are still maintained. The pre-school unit will often have a group of one to fours and a group of one to eights.
We look at each child as an individual, what their  needs are, what stage of development they are at, before changing rooms. For example we could have a very delicate twenty month old baby who does not like the busy toddler room, or we could have a robust eighteen month old who is more than ready to move up. We also look at each unit, sometimes the  baby unit has very young babies in, then six months later they are all mobile. It is also considered so that the children can move through the nursery with friends and familar faces. During this change the children go for short visits to the new unit, to see how they react, staff observe to see if they are ready and if it will benefit the child, parents are informed of their progress.

Do you offer healthy food?
We offer three meals a day, so as a working parent you do not have to worry about cooking a full meal after you pick your child up from nursery if your child needs supper thay will noramlly only need a light snack.
Morning sessions include breakfast, which consist of a chioce of cereal, slices of fresh fruit (we do chop our fruit up very small) toast (brown bread) and pure unsweetened apple or orange juice.

Lunch is a home cooked meal and sweet incorporating our healthy eating plan.
Afternoon sessions include, snack which  consists of a healthy snack such as fresh fruit, vege sticks, bread sticks or chunks of cheese and a drink of milk or filtered water.
Tea is a full meal and sweet incorporating our healthy eating plan.

Our healthy eating plan -  we offer the children in our care, at least five fruit and vegetables per day if attending a full day, proteins and carbohydrates in each meal, we also look at sugar and salt content, we use free range produce as much as possible.
We do not use cheaper alternatives with juice, as many parents do not wish their child to have sweetners (many people believe these to be harmful) instead we use 'high juice' which is a cordial made from fruit.
We cover many special diets (please speak to us regarding your child's requirements, we will help if we can) We also specialise in vegetarian cooking (we do not just exclude the meat product, we offer a healthy vegetarian alternative)

Do you cater for special diets?
We do cater for special diets, specialising in vegetarian, including gluten free, allergies etc, please speak to us regarding your child's individual needs.

What do the children drink?
We have a fliter system separate for drinking water, this is used for all drinks of water and juice made with water. The juice we use is 'high juice' not the cheaper alternatives. Full fat milk which is recommended for young children is offered in the afternoon at snack time. if you prefer your child to have water only instead of juice, please inform us of this preference. All children and older babies are provided with a water bottle

Do I  have to bring any drinks or food for my child?
Not for babies or children over twelve months old. For younger babies we ask you to bring in clean sterelized bottles, with a seperate container of the correct amount of milk formula, when your baby requires a bottle we will make it fresh for them, we also ask you to bring in your babies bottles of water for fluids. We make the bottles up fresh after recieving information regarding the safety of making bottles up too far inadvance from the health authority. The babies meals are all provided fresh by nursery, usually what is being offered to the other children, but blended. If the item is not suitable, we use prevoiusly prepared meals that have been frozen specially for the babies.

Do you plan activities for the babies and children?
Yes we have planned activities throughout the day, using 'birth to three matters' and 'the foundation phase'. All areas of development are available to the babies and children throughout the day, we structure the day to allow for develoment in all areas, including time for:- Stories, songs, play dough, baking, music, painting, sticking, construction, role play, home corner, block play, Welsh, puzzles, sand, waterplay, movement play, quite times and rest.

How do you help my child to settle?
We ask you to arrange settling in sessions the week before start date, every child is different and some may need more sessions than others. We ask you to come to nursery with your child at a pre-arranged time, this allows staff who will be caring for your child to bond with you and your child. This gives time for the child to become familar with staff, surroundings and other children. It also gives you time as the parent to get to know the staff that will care for your child. These session normally last approximately one hour. We keep the session short , so the child is always eager to come back and it is not too much for them at the beginning. On the first visit the parent will normally stay in the room with their child. On the second visit the parent may choose to spend some time in the room and some time out of the room, to see how your child will respond when you are not there. On the third visit we usually ask you to act as you will when the child is in our care,'we pretend you are going' we ask you to sit in the library which gives you chance to fill out the paper work.

Are the settling in sessions charged for?
No we do not charge for settling in sessions, but we do ask that your booking fee of £30.00 is paid before these sessions are arranged (this is non refundable). The booking fee secures your child's place at nursery.
If you require a place to be secured inadvance of more than one month, we also ask you to pay £100 deposit, which will be deducted from your first months fees, (this is normally non-refundable, except in special circumstances).

Do you speak Welsh at the nursery?
Yes we do, we are an English speaking nursery, but as part of our planning we use Welsh regulary, with colours, counting, stories, songs etc.
Some children leave us at school age, to attend Welsh speaking schools.

Do you offer a homely environment?
Yes, the nursery was formerly a large family house, it was converted to all the new building regulations and safety features, but still maintains the atmoshpere of a home. We have carpeted rooms in all areas apart from food areas and messy play. We have dining rooms and quite areas.

Do you have trained first aiders on duty all the time?
Nearly all of our staff have first aid in piadiatrics, we are required to have at least 50% staff holding this certificate, our numbers of qualified staff in first aid far exceeds this.

Can you accept vouchers?
Yes we can accept most vouchers, please let us know if they are not on the list, and we can make the necessary arrangements, please check under 'help with fees'

Do you encourage staff to further their training?
Yes we encourage staff who have achieved there level 2, to progress to level 3, when they are ready. Staff are paid to attend mandatory training such as first aid and travel expenses. Other courses are offered as they become available, we also offer apprentiships within the nursery.

Do I have to book an appointment to view the nursery?
Yes, the reason is to ensure the correct staff to child ratio's are maintained, it takes approximately an hour to an hour and a half to be able to view the nursery, meet some of the staff, view the inspection report and have a chance to read our policies and procedures. As we are a very busy nursery, we ask you to make an appointment to view, we can then make sure someone is available to spend time with you and to show you around as we will not take staff away from the children.
